Sam 'Pokey' Gipson Sr.

Sam “Pokey” Gipson Sr., 73, of Benton passed away Jan. 14. 
He was born Sept. 13, 1939, in Benton to the late Marshall and Ruth Gipson.
Pokey served in the U.S. Air Force from Aug. 8, 1957, to Aug. 7, 1963.
He retired from both the Benton Police Department and Saline County Sheriff’s Department.
At the time of his death, he was serving on the Benton Civil Service Commission.
He is survived by his sons, Lynn Gipson, Sam Gipson Jr. and wife Marjorie, Matthew Gipson and wife Toni, and Mark Gipson and wife Annie; a daughter, Michelle Gipson; his brothers, Sid Gipson and wife Pat of Benton and Jerry Gipson and wife Kim of Richmond, Va.; his grandchildren, Christopher, Raider, Savanna, Isaiah, Stetson and Aiden Gipson; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Funeral service is scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 18, at Ashby Funeral Home with the Rev. Kim Hammer officiating. Burial will follow at Old Rosemont Cemetery.
Visitation is set from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 17, at the funeral home.
