School Board still evaluating Benton superintendent finalists

February 14, 2012

A permanent superintendent for the Benton School District still has not been named.
Benton School Board members interviewed the four finalists for the positions on Monday, but "a couple of the members aren't quite ready to vote yet," said Jeff Morrow, board president.
Morrow said he expects to call a meeting within the next two days to take an official vote on the board's choice.
"A couple of the members wanted a night to sleep on it before voting," Morrow added.
The interviews with the four remaining candidates began at 2 p.m. Monday and continued at two-hour intervals throughout the afternoon and evening.
"It was a long day and a lot to process," he said, "and a couple wanted to make sure they still felt the same way after a night's sleep."
The board had set aside an hour and a half for each candidate's interview, then set 30 minutes to review the candidate's responses to questions.
The final interview was with Dan Jordan, acting superintendent of the district.
The other candidates were interviewed in the following order:
•Jeff Collum of Longview, Texas. Collum currently serves as executive director of secondary education of Tyler ISD, which includes oversight for two 5A high schools, six middle schools, an athletic department, career and technology education and university initiatives.
•Bradley G. Reed, director of student services of the Bentonville School District.
•Larry E. Smith, superintendent of the White Hall School District.
All of the interviews were conducted in executive session.
Once the board makes its choice, a contract must be agreed upon before the decision can be made public, Morrow has said.
Nineteen persons applied for the position.
Initially, the board narrowed the list to eight, then chose three of those to interview and added a fourth who had not been in the original group of eight.
