UPDATE: Pursuit ends with officer-involved shooting

July 30, 2013

Clifford Jones

A pursuit with Benton police this afternoon ended in an officer-involved shooting, where the suspect died at the scene.
About 3 p.m., detectives observed the suspect, identified as 29-year-old Clifford Jones, in the area of Gattin Road and Madison Village and attempted to perform a traffic stop.
Jones reportedly refused to pull over for officers, driving quickly on Gattin Road toward Alcoa Road and then onto Interstate 30.
According to police, Jones began shooting out the open window of his vehicle toward the officers after they deployed "stop sticks" in an attempt to deflate his tires.
According to police, officers then returned fire because they faced a "serious threat."
Jones' vehicle then careened across the grass median of Interstate 30, where it slammed into the center concrete divider.
The suspect reportedly was pronounced dead from injuries at the scene. No officers were injured as a result of this incident.
Additional details will be released when available, according to Lt. Kevin Russell, public information officer for Benton police.
