Icy roads causing traffic pile-ups at I-30

TRAFFIC UPDATE: I-30 east bound at mile marker 116, I-30 west bound mile markers 121 to 118 shut down due to traffic issues.

Benton Police Department and Arkansas State Police are working to clear the roads.

Courier delivery: Expect delays

UPDATE: In light of hazardous road conditions following several inches of sleet and snow accumulations overnight, today's edition of The Saline Courier will be printed about two hours later than usual and delivered by our carriers along with Friday's paper.

Local agencies warn of treacherous conditions

Residents of Saline County who are just waking up might be surprised at the amount of sleet and snow accumulation outside. Just before 6 a.m., official accumulation totals were unavailable from the National Weather Service.

Entergy is reporting multiple power outages in areas just south of Bryant and in the areas of Traskwood, Haskell and Glen Rose, with estimated repair times as late as 10 p.m.

Multiple county agencies are reporting difficulty navigating area roadways, even with four-wheel drive, and noted several stranded ambulances from overnight calls.

Haskell police respond to vehicle in water

UPDATE 11:16 p.m.: According to unofficial sources, the driver and vehicle were retrieved from the water without incident or injury.

First responders in Saline County were dispatched to Dotted Lake in Haskell just before 10 p.m. Wednesday night following a report of a vehicle in the water.

Roads were slick following hours of steady sleet.

Details of the incident are currently unknown, according to county officials, and more information will be posted as it becomes available.

Forecasters: Ice, snow head to Arkansas

NORMAN, Okla. (AP) — Forecasters say winter precipitation will become common late this morning in a band from east central Oklahoma through northern Arkansas to southern Missouri.

A statement from the Storm Prediction Center on Wednesday warned of sleet, ice and snow accumulations. It said the freezing line at the surface largely paralleled Interstate 44 as of 6 a.m. Wednesday and was moving southeastward at 15-25 mph.

Forecasters issued a winter storm warning for all but one of Arkansas' 75 counties. Benton County is under a winter weather advisory.

County library used book sale set for March 7

The Saline County Library Used Book Sale is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, March 7, on the lower level of Herzfeld Library, 1800 Smithers Drive in Benton.

The sale is open to the public and there is no charge for admission.

Library Director Erin Waller said the book sale is one of the best fundraisers for the library, and she attributes it to the unique finds at reasonable prices.

First day of Bryant millage early vote sees high turnout

Nearly 500 people turned out for first day of early voting in a Bryant school election.

Eighty-five residents voted at the Benton poll and 492 residents voted in Bryant, according to the Saline County Clerk’s office.

“The number of early voters is an indicator of how much our patrons have educated themselves about the millage proposal,” said Superintendent Dr. Tom Kimbrell.

The current millage rate for the Bryant School District is 37.2 mills. Officials are seeking an increase of 4.9 mills.
