Wilson is a beautiful black and white cat that has been at the Humane Society of Saline County about 12 weeks.

He needs a special home, according to Ann Sanders, director of the Humane Society of Saline County.

"Wilson had nearly starved to death and had very little hair when we took him in," Sanders said.

"We think someone put flea drops on him and that is what made the large sore he suffered that left him with no hair on the back of his neck," Sanders said.

Arkansas AG asks to help defend drilling tax break

LITTLE ROCK — Attorney General Dustin McDaniel wants to help defend in court a $5 million tax break legislators gave natural gas drillers earlier this year, asking to step in and assist in the case after the state's chief finance officer said he believed the exemption was unconstitutional.

Cool snap brings heat relief to Oklahoma, Arkansas

The dog days of summer are being ushered in with a whimper.

A cold front headed for Oklahoma and Arkansas will bring unseasonably cool temperatures and a chance of rain through next week, weather forecasters said Monday.

It's normally the hottest time of the year, with highs averaging around 95 degrees and nighttime lows in the 70s. But National Weather Service meteorologist Matthew Day said the cool snap will push highs closer to 80 degrees with lows in the 60s through early next week.

Council makes short work of agenda

It only took an hour for Benton City Council to approve five ordinances and two resolutions and hear committee reports in a meeting Monday night.

Two of the ordinances dealt with the purchase of land and one authorized the start of street projects.
Ordinance 48 of 2014 was passed on all three readings by a vote of 9 to 1. The lone negative vote resulted from the absence of Alderman Evelyn Reed.

The ordinance authorizes the purchase of five acres of land adjacent to the Saline County Fairgrounds. The acreage will be paved for use as a parking lot for the Riverside Center complex.

Miller wants another term on Bryant post

Alderman Brenda Miller is seeking re-election to the Bryant City Council.

Miller currently holds the council's Ward 4, Position 1 seat.

"I believe solid background and experience leads to good decisions with local government issues and citizen trust to continue building a progressive Bryant now and for future generations to enjoy," Miller said.

During Miller's 25 years of residency in Bryant, she has seen the city's population grow from "about 4,000 to over 18,000 today."

• A Benton woman reported that a money order she purchased at the Benton Walmart store was cashed at the Bryant Walmart without her knowledge. She had purchased the money order to pay her rent. Records of the transaction indicate the driver's license number of the individual who cashed the order was copied.
• A homemade two-axle, flatbed trailer was reported stolen from Weiss Towing on South Second Street.

Road closure in Bryant to begin Wednesday

The city of Bryant has announced the closure of Henson Place beginning Wednesday, July 30.

According to Mayor Jill Dabbs, the city will be installing culverts across the roadway to improve drainage and prevent flooding in the area.

This road will be closed until the construction work is completed.

Dabbs said the city will make every effort to complete the project before the start of a new school term.
