Haskell police respond to vehicle in water

March 4, 2015

UPDATE 11:16 p.m.: According to unofficial sources, the driver and vehicle were retrieved from the water without incident or injury.

First responders in Saline County were dispatched to Dotted Lake in Haskell just before 10 p.m. Wednesday night following a report of a vehicle in the water.

Roads were slick following hours of steady sleet.

Details of the incident are currently unknown, according to county officials, and more information will be posted as it becomes available.

Forecasters: Ice, snow head to Arkansas

NORMAN, Okla. (AP) — Forecasters say winter precipitation will become common late this morning in a band from east central Oklahoma through northern Arkansas to southern Missouri.

A statement from the Storm Prediction Center on Wednesday warned of sleet, ice and snow accumulations. It said the freezing line at the surface largely paralleled Interstate 44 as of 6 a.m. Wednesday and was moving southeastward at 15-25 mph.

Forecasters issued a winter storm warning for all but one of Arkansas' 75 counties. Benton County is under a winter weather advisory.

County library used book sale set for March 7

The Saline County Library Used Book Sale is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, March 7, on the lower level of Herzfeld Library, 1800 Smithers Drive in Benton.

The sale is open to the public and there is no charge for admission.

Library Director Erin Waller said the book sale is one of the best fundraisers for the library, and she attributes it to the unique finds at reasonable prices.

First day of Bryant millage early vote sees high turnout

Nearly 500 people turned out for first day of early voting in a Bryant school election.

Eighty-five residents voted at the Benton poll and 492 residents voted in Bryant, according to the Saline County Clerk’s office.

“The number of early voters is an indicator of how much our patrons have educated themselves about the millage proposal,” said Superintendent Dr. Tom Kimbrell.

The current millage rate for the Bryant School District is 37.2 mills. Officials are seeking an increase of 4.9 mills.

Overnight lane closures set for I-40, I-430 interchange

NORTH LITTLE ROCK (AP) — Arkansas highway crews will close lanes at the intersection of Interstates 40 and 430 in North Little Rock this weekend.

Crews are putting down pavement on the ramp connecting northbound Interstate 430 and westbound Interstate 40. The northbound inside lane on I-430 will be closed north of the Maumelle exit.

The work will take place overnight on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights. Work will start at 9 p.m. each night and conclude by 7 a.m. the next morning. The closures will not be in effect during the day.

NWS/Little Rock Hazardous Weather Outlook: Wednesday, March 4

As much of the state has been placed under a winter weather warning effective Wednesday, more information has become available from the National Weather Service out of Little Rock:

As temperatures drop Tuesday night into Wednesday morning, the precipitation will transition from liquid rain to a wintry mix.

The timing of the winter precipitation will occur around daybreak Wednesday morning across the north with some sleet but mainly snow expected.

As the cold air surges south Central areas can expect to transition over in the early afternoon.

Benton Chamber's annual banquet is Tuesday

Josh Altman, a reality TV personality from Bravo's "Million Dollar Listing," will highlight tonight's Benton Area Chamber of Commerce annual banquet.

The banquet will begin at 6:30 p.m. at the Benton Event Center, 17322 interstate 30 North.

Gary James, executive director of the chamber, encouraged attendance at the banquet.

"It's sure to be a night to remember with great networking and a fantastic meal," he said.

"Josh Altman will inspire you with his dynamic personality and professional history," James added.

Early voting starts today in Bryant

Early voting begins today for a proposed millage increase for the Bryant School District.

Residents can vote today through Friday at Grace Church in Bryant. The building will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day.

In Benton, residents can vote at the “Vote Here” building today until Friday and then on Monday, March 9. The building will be open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. each day.

Bauxite Council to meet Monday

March 2, 2015

The Bauxite City Council is scheduled to meet Monday at 7 p.m. at City Hall.
According to the agenda, the council will discuss a water contract, the personnel policies handbook, paid holidays for employees, alcohol sales, water department late fees and a fundraiser for City Hall.
This meeting was originally set for Monday Feb. 23, but was rescheduled because of inclement weather.
