BRYANT- The Bryant Hornets used a late fourth-quarter run in a 52-35 victory over the Texarkana Razorbacks on Tuesday night. The Bryant Hornets improve to 17-9 (6-6) on the year. The Hornets have won 6 of their past 8 games after starting the 7A/6A South 0-4.
“We hit a few shots early,” Bryant coach Mike Abrahamson said. “We made some plays.”
Texarkana opened the game with a quick layup, but Bryant would respond with a 9-0 run on three 3-pointers with two of them coming from junior guard CJ Rainey. After a 3-pointer from junior guard Tyler Simmons gave Bryant a 10-point lead, the Razorbacks went on a quick 5-0 run to cut it to 14-9 with 1:02 left in the quarter. With three seconds left, sophomore guard KJ Hill hit a driving layup to give Bryant a 16-9 lead to start the second quarter.
After a Bryant basket started the second, Texarkana went on a 5-0 run to cut the lead to 18-14 with 3:47 remaining before half. Bryant responded by going on a 6-0 run to push the lead back to 10 points with 1:47 left with Hill having a nice driving layup at the end of the run. The Razorbacks got a bucket to cut Bryant’s lead to 24-16 at halftime.
“We shot the ball well early,” Abrahamson said. “I thought once we got it going [to the basket], better things were happening.”
The third quarter was a tightly-contested battle between the two teams. Bryant started the quarter with a 5-0 run with three points coming from the free-throw line, but Texarkana would answer right back with a bucket. After a layup from junior forward Brian Reed pushed the lead to 34-20 with 4:19 remaining, Texarkana would outscore Bryant 11-2 in large part from Bryant’s missed opportunities at the free-throw line to cut Bryant’s lead to 36-31 to start the final quarter.
The fourth quarter belonged to Bryant. The Hornets opened up the quarter with a 6-0 run provided by three different scorers. After a bucket by Texarkana, Bryant responded with an 8-0 run to increase its lead to 50-33 and put the game out of reach. Bryant outscored Texarkana 16-4 in the fourth quarter as the Razorbacks couldn’t get a shot to go down with thanks to Bryant’s pressure defense.
Bryant was led by Hill, who led all scorers with 19 points and added six rebounds along with five assists. Rainey chipped in with 10 points, three rebounds, two assists and two steals, while Reed added nine points, seven rebounds and three steals.
