JESSIEVILLE – The Benton Harmony Grove Cardinals improved to 4-2 in the 5-3A conference with a 9-1 win over the Jessieville Lions on Friday.
Tyler Hamilton started for the Cardinals and struck out 13 Lions in the win, giving up one run on five hits in seven innings. He walked just one.
After a scoreless first inning, the Cardinals (6-8, 4-2) broke on the board with three in the second. Logan Clay double on the first pitch he saw to start the second inning and advanced to third on a Trent Smith ground out. Jordan Allred singled in Clay for the first run of the game, and after Jacob Blockburger struck out, the Cardinals would score runs 2 and 3 on a Tyler Williams single and passed ball for a 3-0 lead after two.
Another Clay double in the top of the third resulted in another run when Allred hit him in again. BHG would go up 6-0 the next inning when Zach Caplinger scored on Hamilton’s double to left field, and Ryan Roush’s single scored Colby Byrd.
It would stay 6-0 until the top of the seventh when the Cardinals would go up 9-0 before allowing a run by a passed ball by the Lions in the bottom. Allred led the way at the plate for Harmony Grove going 3 for 4 with two RBI and two runs. Clay went 2 for 5 and scored twice, and Deven Stowe went 1 for 2 with an RBI. Blockburger went 1 for 3.
The Cardinals play next today at Hot Springs against Fountain Lake. First pitch is 4 p.m.
