BRYANT – The Bryant Lady Hornets volleyball team began the 2013 season with a 3-0 sweep of the Arkansas Baptist Lady Eagles on Tuesday night at Bryant Gym. The Lady Hornets were down 2-0 in the first set before taking the second-year program Lady Eagles 25-8. Bryant would win 25-4 in the second set and 25-8 in the third.
“The biggest thing from tonight was definitely our serving,” Bryant Coach Beth Solomon said. “Savannah Shelton led the team with 20-plus aces tonight.”
A sophomore, Shelton had 24 aces total and led Bryant (1-0) with seven assists. Solomon likes what she sees in Shelton’s serving ability.
“During the second game Savannah was on a role spot serving to nearly every location I told her to serve,” Solomon said. “After serving about 18 straight points I looked at her and told her to jump serve, which, now we know is our new secret weapon. She had a great jump serve on top of her other serves. She did a great job for us.”
Shelton wasn’t the only Lady Hornet acing the opposition. Junior Mariah Aguilar had eight aces and led the team with four kills, sophomore Kaci Squires had six aces and a kill, and junior Madison Greeno had three aces and three kills. Sophomore Skylar Harper also had three aces and two kills.
Though Arkansas Baptist is very young and inexperienced, Solomon sees the Lady Eagles’ potential.
“Arkansas Baptist’s volleyball program is only in it’s second year,” she said. “They have a new coach (Jaclyn Langston) and she is doing a lot of good with them. I can remember being in that position as a coach. I’m willing to bet that when we play them again in a few weeks that they will look like a much better team. We will need to be on our toes.”
The Lady Hornets will play in the Benton Jamboree on Thursday at Benton Arena and Cook Fieldhouse.
