BENTON – Benton senior wide receiver J.V. Davis will be joining some fellow Panthers on the football field soon. Davis signed a letter of intent to play for the Arkansas Tech Wonder Boys on Wednesday afternoon at the Benton Sports Complex field house to join former Panthers Wallace Foote and Chase Pigue.
“He came back his senior year and played like a senior,” Benton football Coach Scott Neathery said of Davis. “He put up some good numbers, helped us win some ballgames, made a lot big plays and made a name for himself. It paid off for him. He’s going to get his school paid for and play football at Arkansas Tech.”
Davis, who runs a 4.6 40-yard dash, had 62 catches his senior season to help the Panthers (6-6) to their best year since 2005. With his 62 catches, Davis led Saline County with 1,264 receiving yards and 14 receiving touchdowns, and averaged 20.4 yards per catch.
“They said it was a good football team, good coaches,” Davis said after talking to his former teammates now Wonder Boys. “Great school and good facilities. Just good everything all around.”
Davis, who said he’s not sure of his major just yet, said he didn’t know the secret to his knack of consistently getting behind the defense.
“I don’t know,” Davis said. “Just good routes, good offense.”
There’s no doubt Neathery knows what Tech, 5-6 overall and 5-5 in the Division II Great American Conference, is getting with Davis.
“They’re getting a sure-handed receiver who can also get behind the secondary,” Neathery said. “Who doesn’t want that? He came up big for us this year and really bailed us out in different situations. Any time we sign somebody, we’re happy. It shows you the program is getting a little bit better and I’m just very proud of J.V.”
