Benton Animal Control offering adoption special

Staff Writer

For those looking for a special gift for their sweetheart, Benton Animal Control is offering the "Sweetheart Special" this week.
The first 16 adoptions are completely free. So far, only one animal has been adopted from the shelter, according to Terry Parsons, director.
This special is open to both cats and dogs, and there are approximately 19 animals available, he added.
The event was started in 2014 by Mayor David Mattingly and his wife, Nancy.
Since its beginning, the special has been successful each year, Parsons said.
This year's special is sponsored by Congo Road Animal Clinic, Benton Veterinary Hospital, The Saline Courier, the city of Benton and the Mattingly family.
Because there were more sponsors for this year's event, the special was expanded from five free adoptions last year to 16 adoptions this year.
The department employees will also be at PetSmart from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, with adoptable animals for the store's national adoption event.
